Artist Statement

This banner entitled Come Home was inspired by the idea of returning home to Pennsylvania after I graduate college. My intent with this banner is to visually communicate my longing for the Pennsylvania landscape and the comfort that I feel when in this nature at home.
I wanted to focus on leaves to represent the woodlands because leaves change, fall off the branches, and grow again--I feel it is comforting to know that nature repeats this cycle as so do many people. I decided to use various textures of fabric to create the leaves to reference how leaves in nature often have multiple colors and are not all shaped the same. Nearing the end of my process, I realized that I did not have as many leaves that I had hoped for so I started working on the text to begin shaping the composition of the banner. I resulted to making my text bigger so that I could fill in the space where I had originally planned to place more leaves.
I want to keep exploring various textures throughout my other work, and would also like to learn more on how to sew. This piece allowed me to explore working with fabric more than I usually would, as well as my explore the connection I have to the nature that surrounds my home.
